Vivian Lee Kappas

Vivian Lee (Toner) Kappas, age 85 passed away peacefully on March 20th , 2024. She was born on February 24th , 1939, in Ft. Thomas, KY to the late John and Ruth Toner. Vivian graduated from Highlands High School in 1957 and earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Kentucky in 1961 and an M.A. in Education from NKU in 1983. She taught English at Western Hills (1961-67) and Lloyd (1986-91) High Schools before retiring as Director of Community Education for Kenton County Schools in 2009. No matter what task she undertook, Vivian always stood out as a leader. Whether starting a little league baseball team for her sons in the 70s or re-designing the landscaping for Dixie Heights High School in the 80s, Vivian never started a project she didn’t finish with world class quality. She even managed to turn a profit with her Community Education program, a feat mostly unknown to other public sector departments. She is survived by her loving husband John Kappas and her sons Scott Kappas (Jennifer) and Brett Kappas. She is also survived by her grandchildren Jay Custer, Caroline Reagan and Charlotte LeMay and her brother Gerald Toner (Carol) and his children Jennie and John. She was preceded in death by her mother Ruth (Shepler) Toner who passed away in 1960 and her father John Toner who passed away in 1983. Visitation will be on April 3rd , 2024, from 10-12 pm at Middendorf Funeral Home, 3312 Madison Pike, Ft. Wright, KY 41017. Memorial service will take place following the visitation at 12pm. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery.
