Thomas Joseph Grady

Dec 12, 1937 — Sep 22, 2026

Thomas Joseph Grady, 88, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2026 in Northern Kentucky.

Tom leaves behind his loving grandchildren, Gretchen Oelsner and Geoffrey Oelsner, his great-granddaughter Phoebe Oelsner, his Nephew James Nee and his Sister Mary Margaret Grady Nee. He is preceded in death by his cherished wife Lois Juanita Henry Grady and his nephew Lawrence Nee.

Tom was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 12, 1937 to James Grady and Margaret Sullivan. He graduated from Loyola Academy, Chicago, IL in June 1955. His early Jesuit education was very influential to his spiritual and intellectual development and led him to join the Society of Jesus in 1957. Tom remained a member of the Society of Jesus through 1972 and attended Florissant, Milford, and West Baden. He received the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from Loyola University in 1962 and 1965, respectively.

After leaving the Society of Jesus in 1972, Tom moved to Northern Kentucky and married Lois.

At various times in his life, he taught philosophy and mathematics at the high school and college level. Tom was hired as a salesman for Netherland Rubber Co. in Cincinnati, OH. His customers respected his product knowledge and valued his honesty. After several years, his job was eliminated, so he enrolled in Northern Kentucky University where he earned a degree in computer programming. Then he was hired by Great American Insurance where he worked until retirement.

Tom played piano almost daily and was always ready to play a game of 500. He loved old westerns, mysteries, reading about history, and a good philosophical discussion. Tom enjoyed listening to live jazz music, playing tennis, and swimming. He and Lois spent many happy years together at home, playing cards, travelling throughout the US, and casually playing at casinos. Forever an academic, Tom spent many hours in the Kenton County library researching the histories of current events, economics, and philosophy. Although he was born in Chicago, some of Tom’s favorite memories were of his time spent in South Dakota, with family in Missouri, and on his farm in Kentucky where he enjoyed rural life and riding horses. Tom was an independent, strong minded individual who will be remembered for his honesty and a reliable, upright, and trustworthy man.

A gathering of family and friends will be held later in October (time and exact date to be determined)  at Middendorf Funeral Home followed by a Memorial Prayer Service at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

In lieu of memorial contributions, the family asks everyone to honor Tom's spirit by taking time out of their day to say a prayer or think a kind thought for others.
