Dear sibling/in-law of Mary (Schmidt) Busse, Paula (Schmidt) Hopewell, Carole Schmidt, James Brueggeman and Beth (Schmidt) Brueggeman, Bonnie (Bohman) Fiedeldey and the late Robert Fiedeldey, and John Bohman and the late Kelly (Hungler) Bohman. Preceded in death by siblings James Neff and Carol (Bohman) Jennings Antoloci.

Both were born at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Covington, KY -- Joe on July 2, 1943 to Franklin Leo Schmidt and Rose Mary (née Helmer) Schmidt, and Ginnie on December 23, 1943 to Carl Henry Bohman and Ann Margaret (née Neff) Bohman. Joe attended St. John’s School, Covington, followed by Covington Catholic High School. Ginnie attended St. Aloysius School, Covington, and completed her education at Notre Dame Academy. They met in their senior year of high school and were married April 20, 1963.

Ginnie provided a nurturing home for her family and faith community as a household manager and event coordinator. She is remembered for her cooking and baking, being an avid reader, and an expert seamstress. Her family has fond recollections of the clothes she handmade for them, including outfits and Halloween costumes for her children, clothing for her sisters-in-law, stoles for baptismal candidates at St. Augustine, and an altered junior bridesmaid dress for her granddaughter, each one imbued with love, all with an unmatched attention to detail. Ginnie worked at Western and Southern before the birth of her first child, and was a Teacher’s Aide at St. Augustine School. Joe prided himself in having worked his way up from the mailroom at Procter & Gamble and retiring after 36 years as a Senior Systems Analyst. In his retirement, Joe enjoyed keeping up his IT skills and answering forum questions for several Google add-ons, especially Flubaroo, for which he earned the nickname "Flubaroo Joe."

Joe and Ginnie were committed to serving their church and community, a value reflected in “GLUA” Joe’s slogan, “God Loves Us All.” They valued giving time, talent, and resources where they would be needed most and best used. Joe was a member of the Holy Name Society and Ginnie the St. Monica Society at St. Augustine Parish in Covington. Joe further served on the Advisory Board for the Messenger diocesan newspaper and on the advisory board of his alma mater, Covington Catholic High School. He was a proud recipient of the Robert B. Noll, Sr. Service Award at St. Joseph Parish in Crescent Springs, honoring his dedication to service and witness to the charity of Christ and His Church. Ginnie was a volunteer teacher’s aide at St. Augustine School, Cub Scout Den Mother for her sons’ pack, and various leadership roles in the St. Monica Society at St. Augustine Parish. Among many other volunteering commitments, Joe and Ginnie both volunteered at the Sisters of Notre Dame Fourth of July Festivals, Covington Catholic bingo and concession stands, as well as St. Augustine fish fries and Giving Tree, festivals at both St. Augustine and St. Joseph parishes, the Diocesan Catholic Children’s Home’s festival and flea market, and more.

They spread their values of generosity and a do-it-yourself ethic. Like his father, “Frankie Fix-It,” Joe subscribed to the ethic of ‘repair it yourself unless you don’t have the skill or knowledge.’ In his retirement years, Joe loved helping people build technological skills, and teaching fiscal responsibility and generosity to his children and grandchildren. We all picked up from Ginnie many of her meticulously executed skills such as folding t-shirts, baking our favorite cakes and cookies, tried and true ways of getting out stains, having a place for everything, bargain shopping, and donating unused items to those who need them.

Both were doting grandparents. Joe adored babies and was even known to ask to hold the baby of a stranger. Ginnie enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren baking, singing, going shopping or on other outings, and playing cards and games with the family (grandchildren loved playing Booby Trap and Uno with her). She loved going to restaurants, and her annual birthday celebration at Frisch’s was a family tradition. Family members warmly recall Ginnie’s big smiles and gentle laughter, and Joe’s jokes, tall tales, and laughing so hard he couldn’t make a sound.
