Elizabeth Jean Schmidt Longshore, who went by “Jean,” was born on May 15, 1932, to William and Cleo Schmidt of Fort Thomas. After graduating from Notre Dame Academy, Jean worked as a private executive secretary at P&G. She married her high-school sweetheart, Robert “Bob” Longshore, with whom she shared five children. Jean was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She excelled at crocheting, cooking, writing, and entertaining, and she was never dealt a bridge hand she couldn’t lose. An avid volunteer for years, Jean served as President of the St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center Women’s Guild and volunteered with the Redwood Guild, the Diocesan Home Guardian Guild, the St. Agnes Parish Council and School Board, and the Seminary Ball. Jean attributed much of her success to her wonderful experience at Notre Dame, where she and Bob have established a scholarship in her name. Jean died peacefully at home surrounded by her husband of 68 years, Bob; her children Robert (Julia), Greg (Tammy), Tom (Paula), and Mary Lynn (Lee Duncan); and her thirteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Jean was predeceased by her sister Virginia and son Kenneth and is survived by her brother William (Joan) Schmidt and sister Joan (Richard) Thiem. In lieu of flowers, Jean asks that donations be made to the Longshore Scholarship Funds at Notre Dame Academy, Covington Catholic, and Newport Central Catholic. Visitation will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, on Tuesday, February 21, at 11 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at noon. Middendorf Funeral Home, Ft. Wright is handling the arrangements. Online condolences can be made at www.middendorf-funeralhome.com
