George N. Schneider

It is with heavy hearts that the family of George Nicholas Schneider announces his passing on July 21, 2026, at the age of 89. Born on December 6, 1936, to the late Jim and Helen Schneider. George grew up in Bellevue, Kentucky, and attended Newport Catholic High School and graduated in 1954 where he was a member of the 1954 state baseball championship team. He then attended Villa Madonna, now Thomas More University, and graduated in 1958.

George was a leader, teacher, coach, mentor, role model and friend to hundreds of students in Northern Kentucky for almost 50 years. His motto was to treat every boy as his own. He began his teaching and coaching career at his Alma mater, Newport Catholic High School. George then went on to Holy Cross High School for 10 years where he led his basketball team to win the 9th District Championship and be State Runner Up in 1965. He was named Northern Kentucky Coach of the year 1964-1965.

George then began his 36-year career at Covington Catholic High School where he served in many positions: teacher, basketball and baseball coach, Assistant Principal, Athletic Coordinator, Dean of Discipline and Attendance, Business Manager, Director of Operations and whatever they needed.

Over the years, he received many coaching honors both local and statewide: Hall of Fame at Newport Catholic High School, Holy Cross and Covington Catholic, member of Northern Kentucky Hall of Fame, a Kentucky Colonel, Kentucky Admiral Member, Kentucky Coaching Honor, one of Northern Kentucky’s most winningest coaches and the Coach Jim Connor Award. He was also a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Outside of teaching and coaching, George was a devoted family man who loved watching sports. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathy Crail-Schneider (nee Acree); his children, Judy (Fritz d. 2021) Thorp, Gary (Pamela) Schneider, Janice (Steve) Franxman, and Greg (Angela) Schneider; his stepchildren, David (Joyce) Crail, Karen (Jack) Grefer, Mark (Tina) Crail, Jeff (Lisa d. 2025) Crail, Paula Crail, Kevin (Kim) Crail; his grandchildren, Benjamin (Kristine) Schneider, Jessica (Sam) Miller, Grant (Caitlyn) Schneider, Jake (Hannah) Schneider, Jordan (Tyler) Osborne, Kirsten (James) Noel, Trent (Seneca) Franxman, Joshua (Jennifer) Schneider, Jenna Schneider, Justin Schneider and Jill Schneider; his step grandchildren, Andrew (Laura) Crail, Brooke Crail, Jason (Kristen) Grefer, Tim (Cirstyn) Grefer, Bradley (Saundra) Crail, Justin Crail, Jake (Brittney) Crail, Shelby Crail, Sarah (Adam) Vale, Ryan Crail, Rob Crail, Kyle Crail, Karly Crail, and Katie Crail; his 17 great grandchildren; and his 9 step great grandchildren; his siblings, Dave (Rose (d. 2007), Janet) Schneider, and Mary Ann (Paul) Sanders. In addition to his late parents, George is preceded in death by his late wife, Ruth Schneider (nee Gauspohl) and brother, James (Carol) Schneider.

Visitation will take place on Monday, August 3, 2026, from 4:00 pm until the Mass of Christian Burial at 6:00 pm at St. Barbara Church, 4042 Turkeyfoot Rd, Erlanger, KY 41018. Burial will be on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at 10:00 am at St. Stephen Cemetery.
